This policy is currently under review and new version will be posted in due course.

In this difficult climate, and as one of a number of initiatives to lower general and administrative expenses, no donations will be considered. Domtar will review this decision should its financial situation improve.

Our philosophy: Improving the quality of community life

Well aware of the key role that it plays in developing and improving the quality of community life, Domtar allocates significant human and financial resources and products to honour this commitment. Domtar believes that by becoming a party to, and a partner in, the social and economic development of the community, it can really make a difference.

Each year Domtar supports this commitment with an amount representing approximately 1% of the average of its before-tax profits from the last four-year period, subject to budget considerations.  Domtar wishes to focus its efforts and resources on philanthropic causes that will expand the influence of the organizations with which it co-operates. Domtar also wishes to become a partner of innovative, forward-looking projects that are in keeping with its business values (please refer to our Code of Ethics).

Our Objectives:

  • Improve the quality of life in the communities where Domtar is present;
  • Enhance the communication process between the Corporation's employees and non-profit  organizations in the community;
  • Contribute the Corporation's human, material and financial resources for the benefit of  the community;

The areas we support :

  • Education, culture, and the arts
  • The Environment
  • Community Leadership

Promoting Education, Culture, and the Arts: A Window on the World

Education, culture, and the arts are closely linked to one of Domtar's main products: paper. Domtar wishes to invest in the social, intellectual and cultural development of communities by providing financial assistance to programs that allow people, young and old alike, to acquire knowledge and new skills.

Domtar favors projects that:

  • Encourage young people and adults to pursue their education as well as continuing education programs;
  • Emphasize teaching and promotion of culture;
  • Foster cultural integration.

 In this area, Domtar supports literacy as its main cause.

The Environment: A Sustained Commitment

Domtar devotes considerable sums of money to the modernization of its processes and facilities through wide-ranging environmental management programs.

Domtar favors projects that:

  • Heighten school-age children's awareness of the protection of the environment;
  • Raise the general public's awareness of the importance of sustainable growth.

Community Leadership: Promoting Quality of Life

Domtar is a major employer and economic agent.  A considerable number of the Corporation's facilities are located in communities far from large urban centers. These smaller towns have specific needs and, as a general rule, do not have access to as many resources as larger cities.

For this reason, Domtar earmarks a significant portion of its resources for the funding of local initiatives. Through such contributions, Domtar wishes to enhance the value of existing programs and help make worthwhile, new initiatives possible.

Domtar favors projects that promote creativity, entrepreneurship and a sense of initiative among organizations in the milieu.

Eligibility

Domtar will consider applications for support from organizations that meet its philanthropic objectives and fall within its three target areas. In addition, the applicant must be a non-profit organization. For request amounting to $5,000 and more, the applicant must be registered with Revenue Canada as a non-profit organization or its equivalent, or a duly registered U.S. charitable organization.

Types of Donations

In addition to making substantial financial contributions, Domtar grants donations in kind (e.g. donations of paper for brochures aimed at heightening awareness of illiteracy).  This type of donation is supported by the Corporation, as is time volunteered by Domtar’s management and employees.
